Geek tip: here’s how to turn your MP3 songs into iPhone ringtones

Still wonder how can you play custom ringtones from your iPhone?

If you’re sick and tired of a standard iPhone ringtone you’ve never managed to change, here’s a little lifesaver tip for you. You’ll only need to have iTunes 12 on Mac or on a PC running Windows 8 or 10. Now follow the guide!

► Open iTunes 12

Obviously, first of all, make sure that the track you want to convert to a ringtone is located in your iTunes library. If not, just drag the desired file into “My music”.

► Click on “Get information”

Right-click on the desired track, then “Get Info”. Choose “Options”.

► Define a 30-second piece of music

Choose a music piece of 30 seconds maximum to set as your ringtone. Press OK to validate the modification. Go to the File menu, then Convert and select “Create AAC Version”. Right-click on the newly created file and choose “Show in Finder” (or folder).

► Copy the file to the desktop

To properly convert MP3 to iPhone ringtone, copy your extract to your desktop. Then delete it on iTunes using right-click. Now go back to the desktop, change the extension of your ringtone from .m4a to .m4r then double-click on the file (in .m4r format) to open it in iTunes.

► Connect your iPhone to iTunes

The audio file now appears in the “Sounds” or “Alarm” section. Plug in your iPhone and select “Sounds and Sync Sounds”, then click “Apply” to start synchronization.

► Now grab your iPhone!

Unlock it and go to “Settings”, select “Sound”. Next, click on “Ringtone” in the “Sounds and vibration patterns” section and set your new default ringtone.

Note ⇒ You can also assign one of your ringtones to a particular contact. To do this, simply go to the “Phone” application, then go to the “Contacts” section (bottom middle). Select the contact in question and click on “Edit” (top right), then on “Ringtone”. And there you go!
